U.S. GROCERY SHOPPING TRENDS: EXPLORING THE IMPACT OF INFLATION, SUSTAINABILITY & TECHNOLOGY

ATLANTA – Sep. 18, 2023 – In an August survey conducted by Arketi Group, 95% of consumers indicated inflation continues to impact their grocery shopping habits. A mere 5% said inflation was having no impact at all.

The first in a series of research, Arketi Group’s 2023 Consumer Pulse on Grocery Shopping examined U.S. adults and their grocery habits – including, how, when, where and what they shop for. The B2B PR and marketing firm’s findings offer a unique perspective for industry stakeholders to better understand and engage their target demographic.
Even considering the impact of inflation, Arketi’s Consumer Pulse found shoppers weigh factors beyond price alone. The research revealed:

• Despite 81% of respondents living within 10 minutes of a grocery store, 57% regularly order groceries delivered.

• Of those, 73% prefer groceries delivered from a store over a warehouse.

• Shoppers prioritize sustainable practices as 86% say sustainability has at least some effect on their buying decisions.

• Localization is equally vital, with 80% of respondents saying it is important for stores to curate goods for their community’s specific needs.

The Consumer Pulse also explored an emerging trend – increasing competition between convenience stores and traditional retail or grocery stores. The study found that a majority (58%) of respondents bought prepared food from a convenience store over a grocery store in the past month, with 42% specifically buying breakfast.

“While it may feel like you’re on autopilot when shopping in a grocery store, the truth is you’re making tons of small decisions that determine what you buy and even how much you buy,” said Erica England, Vice President at Arketi Group. “With our first Consumer Pulse, we explored the rapidly evolving grocery industry to uncover the factors and trends influencing those decisions. Our findings confirmed some expectations and revealed a few surprises for grocers, convenience stores and all who touch the industry.”
